Supermarine Spitfire
F Mk.XIVe

Early Spitfire F Mk.XIV

Later Spitfire F Mk.XIVe with its Teardrop Canopy
The Spitfire Mk XIV entered service in squadrons during 1944 and it was the first RR Griffon engined Spitfire to enter in large scale production. It had a completely redesigned airframe with a new fuselage. It was powered by RR Griffon 65 or 66 engine with five bladed Rotol propeller. The first examples to enter service in Europe went to No. 610 Squadron, in January 1944. Subsequently 37 RAF squadrons flew it. Spitfire Mk XIV was intended for combat at all altitudes and it participated in attacks on the enemy's road and rail communications in preparation for the invasion of Normandy. It succeeded well also against flying bombs (V1), destroying over 300.
